Multi-Image

The most beautiful image you’ve never seen.

As an art form, multi-image traces its roots to the pre-cinema “Magic Lantern Shows” of the 1890’s that projected “dreams spun of light”, for the entertainment of our Victorian ancestors.

In the 1970’s “multi-image” married Kodak slide projectors with nascent computer technology to control large arrays of projectors. The resolution, depth and color of the projected image were vastly superior to video or feature films. I adopted this technology in 1975 and have created many presentations over the years. Despite the beauty of this medium, very few people have ever seen a multi-image show. This is primarily because the projection and control systems are expensive, complicated, and unwieldy. Widespread distribution is not possible.

But I must admit, I am still in love with multi-image. I love the feeling of escaping the bonds of time and circumstance as one stunning image slowly dissolves into another. Between these dissolving images is formed a third; an amorphous, mysterious transition state; a gateway to other realms of understanding; to the intuitive world of our dreams. 3rd Image is a term, coined by a few of us who actively pursue this rare and beautiful art form, that describes the crack between the worlds of everyday rational cognition and the realms of our deepest imaginings; a soul healing meditation on beauty.

Just as digital technology has revolutionized photography, digital projection is now making ultra high-resolution computer presentations possible. Today, there are several software programs for home PC’s that allow the import, editing and display of very high resolution digital images that rival the richness of film when projected. The resultant presentations can be easily distributed on a DVD.
